Medicare Enrollment Deadlines in the USA
Medicare Enrollment Deadlines in the USA
In the United States, there are two groups of people who will be automatically enrolled in Medicare; all others will need to apply to participate in Medicare.
The first group includes individuals under 65 who receive Social Security disability benefits. Your Medicare enrollment will be automatic in the 25th month of receiving these benefits.
The second group includes those who are not disabled but have received Social Security benefits for at least four months prior to the month they turn 65.
All others must physically register for Medicare to receive benefits.
For new Medicare participants, you have a seven-month initial enrollment period that begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and continues for three months after that date.
If your birthday falls on the first day of the month, your enrollment period starts four months before you turn 65 and ends two months after the month you turn 65.
So, you have seven months to enroll in Medicare.
Here’s an example of initial enrollment.
If your birthday is on October 13th.
The first day you can start participating in Medicare is October 1st.
You can apply for Medicare as early as July 1st, three calendar months before your Medicare coverage begins.
The last day you can apply for Medicare within the initial enrollment period is January 31st, the last day of the third month after your birth month.
If the application is submitted in October, Medicare will start on November 1st; if submitted in November, it will begin on December 1st, and so on.
If your birthday falls on October 1st, the first day of the month rather than the 13th, the whole process shifts forward by one month.
Your Medicare coverage can start no earlier than September 1st.
Your initial enrollment period begins on June 1st and ends on December 31st.
It is essential to pay close attention to these dates, as missing them could lead to late enrollment penalties, although there is currently a discussion about removing the penalty period.
The enrollment period usually takes about 30 days after submitting the application to receive your card.
If your Medicare begins before you receive your card, don’t worry; your Medicare benefits are in effect whether or not you have the card, and everything will be confirmed as soon as you receive your card and Medicare number.
